How Acupuncture for Weight Loss Can Work

If you are having problems with losing weight and you have tried everything you can think of, you might want to consider acupuncture for weight loss at a local Brisbane acupuncture clinic. The acupuncturist when you first meet with them will come up with a plan for you that uses a combination of ear and body points. Some of the points that are vital to weight loss are:

  • Mouth
  • Stomach
  • Lung
  • Shenmen (a calming point)
  • Endocrine
  • Adrenal and Ovary
  • Spleen
  • Kidney
  • Thyroid
The acupuncturist in Brisbane will choose two or more of these points of acupuncture for weight loss all depending upon the patient's weight problem and their personality profile regarding their overeating.

During their first few acupuncture for weigh loss treatments, the acupuncturist in Brisbane will more than likely use the “Four Gate” points in order to circulate energy through the body and calm down the nervous system. The acupuncturist may also use some electro stimulation on some of the points in order to increase the endorphin release and to help stimulate the metabolism.

The needles used on the patient will be kept in place for about 30 to 45 minutes all depending upon how much support is needed for the patient. When the needles have been removed they then will put ear tacs with adhesive on them and then these will be placed in the same spots on the ear where the needles were to continue stimulation between the acupuncture treatments. So that when the patient starts to feel an urge to eat, they will put mild pressure to that point or they will rub the area back and forth for about 20 seconds. This in turn will cause a mild endorphin release and will relax the patient and then will help them regain their willpower to resist the temptation to eat.

The treatment plan that is needed is going to depend on the goals of the patient for losing weight, the speed that they want to lose it and their commitment to actually keeping off the weight. If their overeating is severe, then a daily treatment for five days is often appropriate and then it can taper off the next week to every other day and the third week to every three days. The average patient however, who wants to lose about 5 to 10 pounds, having one treatment every three days or two times a week until they reach their goal is the norm.

Along with using acupuncture for weight loss it is important that the patient also get nutritional counseling and make some lifestyle changes. They should lower their fat and carbs intake and add some sort of exercise to their routine.
